Environmental expertise grounded in science and local knowledge
hyper-hollow began in 2012 when two university colleagues noticed a gap in the environmental consulting market. Developers and landowners needed practical guidance that translated complex ecological requirements into actionable steps. Most available services either oversimplified the science or buried clients in technical jargon.
We set out to bridge that gap. Starting from a small office in inner Brisbane, we built a practice focused on clear communication, rigorous methodology, and genuine commitment to conservation outcomes that work within commercial realities.
Every project presents an opportunity to demonstrate that thoughtful development can coexist with ecological protection. We've seen firsthand how early engagement with environmental constraints often leads to better design outcomes—not just for wildlife, but for the people who will live and work alongside these landscapes.
Our team members chose this field because they care deeply about Australian ecosystems. That passion translates into meticulous fieldwork, honest assessments, and recommendations that prioritise long-term ecological health over short-term convenience.
"We measure our success not just by approvals obtained, but by the habitats protected and restored through our guidance."
The hyper-hollow team combines formal qualifications with extensive field experience across diverse Australian environments. Our senior ecologists hold postgraduate degrees in environmental science, ecology, and conservation biology, complemented by certifications in ecological assessment methodologies recognised by approval authorities.
Collectively, we've conducted surveys across coastal heathlands, subtropical rainforests, dry sclerophyll woodlands, and urban fringe environments. This breadth of experience means we understand the ecological processes and species assemblages specific to different regions and habitat types.
We maintain active involvement with professional bodies including the Ecological Society of Australia and participate in ongoing professional development to stay current with regulatory changes and scientific advances.
Environmental consulting shouldn't feel adversarial. We position ourselves as partners in your project, working collaboratively to identify constraints early, explore alternatives, and develop strategies that satisfy regulatory requirements while respecting your commercial objectives.
Before making recommendations, we invest time understanding your site's ecological context. Desktop analysis of vegetation mapping, species records, and planning overlays provides baseline knowledge, but there's no substitute for boots-on-ground assessment. Our field surveys capture the nuances that database records miss.
Not every site requires the same level of assessment. A cleared paddock with scattered trees warrants different investigation than remnant bushland with threatened species potential. We scope our services appropriately, ensuring you don't pay for unnecessary work while still meeting your obligations.
We explain our findings in plain language and provide clear guidance on implications for your project. If significant constraints exist, you'll hear about them early—when options remain available—rather than discovering problems late in your approval process.
Engaging hyper-hollow typically begins with an initial consultation where we discuss your project, review available information, and outline an appropriate scope of work. Following your acceptance of our proposal, we conduct fieldwork during suitable conditions, analyse findings, and prepare comprehensive documentation.
Throughout this process, you'll have direct access to the ecologist assigned to your project. We encourage questions and provide progress updates at key milestones. Our goal is to ensure you understand both the process and the outcomes before reports are finalised.
